Xan Mayer

Xan Mayer Bio

Objects have souls. An old glass is a person. Items on a desk speak of a life. Shadows fade into mystery. A self-taught oil painter, Xan believes that in the creative process he gives life to objects, to lines, to color. Xan’s paintings have gained notoriety by their ability to connect with the viewer, resonating in a way that is intimate and personal.

Growing up on Cape Cod, Xan Mayer was exposed to art at a very young age. His mother introduced him to art books and took him to local galleries and museums. He quickly became an avid student of painting. He sought out and immersed himself in all eras of art. Xan learned to paint by studying the work of masters from all eras. Renaissance masters captured Xan’s attention and their unmistakable influence can be seen in his work.

From Renaissance masters and theory, Xan learned to paint the “essence” of an object with a few carefully chosen brushstrokes. His portraits are mysterious, lonely, romantic and yet familiar, placed in settings we often see ourselves. His creative process is intuitive and visceral, endowing a resonance that pulls the viewer into the moment and history of the subject.
